Vaccine Should Protect Dogs

At first glance, it sounds like an epidemic.

Last year, 120 shelter dogs in Chicago died of canine distemper. The usually
fatal viral disorder also hit Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, Atlanta, Dallas
and Washington state.

Last month New York City's Animal Care & Control issued a news release
headlined "Protect Your Pets, New York" urging owners to "fully immunize"
their animals. And just last week, shelter officials confirmed a distemper
case in a dog that had reportedly been vaccinated.

But before you speed-dial your vet to schedule a distemper booster, listen
to vet Ronald Schultz, chairman of pathobiological sciences at the
University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine at Madison, who has
been studying the efficacy of canine vaccines since the 1970s.

"The idea that outbreaks occurred as a result of owners inadequately
vaccinating their dogs really is not the case at all," says Schultz, who was
part of a task force studying the Chicago outbreak. "If a dog was
effectively vaccinated as a puppy, and very certainly if it was ever
vaccinated at a year old, it is immune for life."

Schultz adds that the majority of the sick Chicago dogs had never been
vaccinated.

By contrast, he says, "the vaccinated pet population in Chicago never had
any problem."

Distemper was the leading cause of death among dogs until the 1950s, when a
vaccine was introduced. Until recently, it has been considered an "old"
disease -- not quite eradicated, but generally under control, with shelters
normally seeing only a handful of cases.

Schultz notes that today, canine distemper is still prevalent among
wildlife, including raccoons, coyotes and foxes. That is likely how the
Chicago outbreak began, he adds: Vehicles used to transport stray dogs had
previously picked up infected raccoons, providing a point of transmission.

With the distemper vaccine, Schultz says, one jab will do you -- provided
the shot imparts immunity. That can be gauged with a titer, a blood test
that measures antibody levels.

Puppies are trickier. During their first weeks of life, they are protected
by maternal antibodies from their mothers. Vaccinating too early can result
in those antibodies interfering with the vaccine, leaving the puppy more
vulnerable than before.

And the age at which maternal immunity fades varies from puppy to puppy.
Schultz says that at 6 weeks, about half of puppies no longer have maternal
immunity; at 9 weeks, it's about 75 percent; and at 12 weeks, about 90
percent. Given those odds, he recommends keeping a puppy relatively isolated
until 12 weeks, then vaccinating. Several weeks later, owners should titer,
and, if the puppy has inadequate antibody levels, revaccinate.

Ed Boks, executive director of New York City's Animal Care & Control, says
that, in shelters, mass vaccination is crucial for avoiding outbreaks.

"Veterinarians in general don't know much about vaccines, and they know less
about immunology," he says.

These recommendations are from the AAHA, Texas A& M University and 22
Schools of Veterinary Medicine here in the US.

Vets admit that that every dog should receive vaccines like distemper and
parvovirus, though they do not know the real duration of immunity. It is
likely the life of the dog, an interval of every three years has been
suggested as a safeguard.

Bordetella & Lepto vaccines are only recommended for those dogs at risk of
exposure to the diseases.

Corona, Giardia , and CAV 1 are not recommended.

When giving puppy shots, do not give vaccines 2 weeks apart. 3-4 weeks is
better. If you are late for a vaccine in the puppy series-

Distemper & Parvo @ 6 weeks or younger

Not recommended.
At this age, maternal antibodies form the mothers milk (colostrum) will neutralize the vaccine and only 30% for puppies will be protected. 100% will be exposed to the virus at the vet clinic.

Corona

Not recommended.
1.) Disease only affects dogs <6 weeks of age.
2.) Rare disease: TAMU has seen only one case in seven years @ each of these Vet Schools: TAMU, Cornell, Colo.St., U.Cal.@ Davis
3.) Mild self-limiting disease.
4.) Efficacy of the vaccine is questionable. IgA Mucosal antibodies needed

Giardia

Not recommended
1. Efficacy of Vaccine unsubstantiated by independent studies.
2. IgA mucosal antibodies? Immunity against a complex organism?
3. Natural infection does not provide immunity.

Extra vaccinations for Rottweilers at 20 weeks, etc-Are not necessary if high titer Parvovirus vaccines are used.
“Booster Vaccination” before breeding- does not increase maternal antibody transfer in colostrum.
Nosodes – Study by Dr. Ron Schultz demonstrated no efficacy.

Distemper and Parvo at 6 weeks – exposure to disease will be increased by visiting a Veterinary Hospital while only 30% of puppies will be protected, due to maternal antibody interference with vaccine. Vaccination by a breeder at home with Parvo only may help prevent losses but will delay next vaccination to 9 weeks.

It seems the trick to successful vaccination of our dogs lies in the timing. The pups need to be old enough for the maternal antibodies not to interfere and not so often as so cause immune suppression.

So, I keep my puppies rather isolated from the outside world until first vaccinations. I vaccinate for Distemper & Parvo at 8 weeks & 12 weeks. New owner does another at 16 weeks & gets rabies vaccination at that time. We also give Bordetella (every 6 months) but only if the dogs go to shows, another kennel or training facility.

Interference by maternal antibodies is regarded as a major cause of vaccination failure in puppies. Attempts to overcome this problem have been based on administration of multiple vaccinations. Unfortunately, the old vaccination schedule started too early & the mother's antibodies, that pups get through the milk, interfere with the vaccine. So, they were not immunized. Then subsequent vaccinations too close together only suppressed the immune system & weaken it.

The vaccinations should be given later & less of them given. Enough to stimulate the immune system & not bombard it at such a young age.

The new vaccine schedule starts at Distemper & Parvo @ 8 weeks when the puppies are weaning or best if off Dam completely.

Again at 12 & 16 weeks. Repeat Distemper, Parvo, Rabies at 1 year of age. Then it is felt by the Vets schools that every 3 years is sufficient for the rest of the dogs life.

Generally, after 7 years of age, dogs really don’t need "Boosters" but most Laws require dogs must have current rabies vaccination.
