Patellas are checked to see stifle joint (knee). In patellar luxation, the kneecap luxates, or pops out of place, either in a medial or lateral position.
There is more information about Patellar Luxation on the OFA website here:
http://www.offa.org/patluxgeninfo.html
Patellar Luxation is typically an issue with breeds that are fiarly strightin the stifle, for example, Chinee Shar-Pei, Shiba Inu, Akitas, etc. Since the Thai Bangkaew also have a straighter stifle we wanted to check them and see if they have a problem or not. Normal means that the 3 we tested have no luxation, no problem.
Hip Dysplasia is a terrible genetic disease because of the various degrees of arthritis (also called degenerative joint disease, arthrosis, osteoarthrosis) it can eventually produce, leading to pain and debilitation.
More information about hip dysplasia is here:
http://www.offa.org/hipgeninfo.html
The hips are graded by how well the hip joint fits into the socket, this can only be checked by and x-ray. The way a dog moves has nnothing to do with how well seated their hip joints are, some dogs that move very correctly are dysplastic and some that move badly are normal.
Hips have 3 passing grades:
Excellent
Good
Fair
Dysplastic can be:
Mild
Moderate
Severe
Dysplasia is a horrible crippling disease and we are glad that the first 3 dogs checked have extremely good hips. Other breeds are not so lucky 74% of Bulldogs are dysplastic and 60% of Pugs, we're hoping that Bangkaew remian on the other end of the chart with Siberian Huskies, 2% and Borzoi, 1.8%.
